Congenital Intestinal Obstruction



Abstract
This retrospective study is a review and analysis of 82 cases of congenital intestinal obstruction diagnosed and treated at Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, Yonsei University from Jan, 1971 to Aug. 1988.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The series was made up of 18(22%) duodenal obstruction, 10(12.2%) jejunal obstruction, 35(42.6%) ileal obstruction and 19(23.2%) midgut malrotations.
2) The ratio of male to female was 2.3 : 1.
3) Associated anomalies were present in 12 patients and congenital heart disease was the most common. Especially in duodenal obstruction, high incidence(28%) of associated anomalies was observed.
4) The overall mortality rate was 24.4%, highest in duodenal obstruction.
5) The causes of death were sepsis, respiratory failure, associated anomaly, liver failure.
6) The risk factors attributable to mortality were associated anomaly, sepsis, respiratory failure, prematurity and low birth weight.
